WMS Mini Relay for Life
As you all know, we have been touched by cancer right here at our schools with students and staff. In an effort to raise awareness regarding ways to fight cancer, we have planned a Mini Relay for Life at Wellington Middle School! Relay For Life® is a community-based event where groups of people come together and form teams to raise money for the fight against cancer. Additionally, Relay For Life is an opportunity for the American Cancer Society® to educate the public about prevention and early detection of cancer and the services provided to the community. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity, and over the years has helped fund 38 Nobel Prize winners in cancer research.
Our school now has the opportunity to host a Mini-Relay, an extension of our local Larimer County Relay For Life. A Mini-Relay is set up similar to the community Relay For Life, but is designed just for schools. We have been provided with numerous educational worksheets, posters and fun activities for our students. These activities can parallel the standards which we are already teaching and offer new and fun ways to reinforce these topics. We are hosting our Mini Relay for Life, under the direction of Shawna Stacy all day on May 17th.
Here is what we know: We are making a commitment to have someone walking at all times between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Staff, students, parents and community members can join in to support the cause! Raising money is not the main focus this year, although we will offer the opportunity to raise some funds. We want to raise awareness about how cancer can be beaten! We have lots of proof right here! So, we will host activities, class competitions and chances to win prizes and t-shirts throughout the day. We’ll have sunscreen and water available and lots of community support. Walkers can “celebrate, remember and fight back” by honoring those who have been touched by cancer. This fits into our wellness plan too! PE classes, health classes, AVID classes, Eagles After Hours, the Track Team and any classes that want to participate, can. There are multiple ways to support our curriculum! We have lots of resources and will offer up all sorts of ways to participate. If you would rather not, you don’t have to.
Shawna, who has a Relay for Life adult team, is very excited to get this going at Wellington. We support her efforts and want to encourage you to do the same. We’ll keep you posted about what’s going on. Please join us in this important activity.
