PSD 3rd Graders To Receive Their Own Dictionaries From Rotary Club
A local community organization hopes to improve literacy by putting dictionaries in the hands of PSD 3rd-graders.
Fort Collins Breakfast Rotary Club members will present each 3rd grader at Bennett IB World Elementary School, 1125 Bennett School Road, with their very own hardcover dictionary at 9 a.m., Monday, October 3, 2006. Business leaders from Mexico, who will be visiting the Fort Collins community, will be present as well.
Rotary’s “Find It: The Dictionary Literacy Project” is a new project that provides 3rd graders with their own dictionaries. The dictionary project is an expansion of Rotary READ Fort Collins, a program that strives to improve literacy by providing reading incentives to students and by arranging children’s author visits to schools. For several years, PSD schools have participated in the successful reading program sponsored by the four area Rotary clubs.
Fort Collins Breakfast Rotary Club piloted the new dictionary program in the spring of 2005 at Bennett after it was determined that literacy could be further improved by putting dictionaries in the hands of 3rd graders. The Breakfast Rotary Club hopes to expand the program to more schools this fall.
