History

Bennett opened in fall 1963 and was named for Merle Bennett, the founder of PSD’s kindergarten program. Bennett was remodeled in 1994 and again in 2002. The playground was updated summer 2005.

Learning culture

The Bennett community—staff, students, parents, and volunteers—values experiential education. From inquiry-based teaching practices to realistic learning opportunities, Bennett students are empowered to solve real world problems while mastering the curriculum. With families from all over the world, students benefit from diverse world views and experiences.

Academic environment

Bennett, an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) for students in grades K–6, is a uniquely international program focusing on the total growth of the developing child, encompassing social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs in addition to academics.

A key component to IB instruction is service to others. Students use their knowledge and skills to better their community and the world. They undertake several student-initiated service projects each school year.

Bennett offers gifted and talented programs (Voyager Lab and Young Scholars), Title I services, after-school learning opportunities, and English language acquisition.

Instructional & enrichment programs

Bennett encourages development of well-balanced students and provides full-time specials, intramurals, choir, computer club, writing club, art club, Odyssey of the Mind, Lego Robotics, Scouts, and a variety of other extracurricular activities. All Bennett students take Spanish classes.
