Geocaching
THIS IS FUN!
Geocaching is an exciting activity that satisfies the adventurous spirit in us. Geocaching can challenge the mind and/or the body in an electronic version of treasure hunting where the "treasure" is either an actual object or a virtual one. Some hunts are obvious and others are a true challenge of all our resources.
To learn more about this great new activity point your browser to www.geocaching.com for an in-depth look at the world of geocaching.
Cougar Kids Club Geocaching Class
This marks the second year geocaching has been taught as a part of the CKC, bringing the thrill of the hunt to the Eyestone campus. This year the caches are being published on the Eystone website so the students can look them up and decide which ones they would like to find.
If any other reader of this page would like to have some fun and challenge your skills, we are glad to have you join us in the hunt as long as you observe a few commonsense rules. These caches are designed so CKC geocaching students can experience situations commonly encountered in hunting caches and are therefore heavily concentrated in the Eyestone area.
All of the instructional caches originally contain a First Finder card which a CKC student should take to "jmike". Each CKC student is allowed only one FF card and is expected to leave subsequent cards they discover so other CKC students can find their first.
Non-CKC students (including adults who enjoy geocaching) may use the caches until they are disabled for the season. Please observe the rules of geocaching etiquette and leave all caches in good shape for the next finder. Be sure to sign the log and leave your comments about the cache. Many caches are in high traffic areas and are also highly visible so practice becoming "invisible" by not attracting attention to yourself when finding, retriving and replacing caches. It is often advisable to move a little away from the area of the cache to sign the logbook and make trades.
Many of the caches are of the micro variety and others have items for trade. CKC students: be sure to trade fair or just sign the logbook if you don't have anything to trade. It is OK to come back later to trade an item if there is something in there you really want. If you do, sign the logbook again and explain what you did.
CKC student use of Geocaching account/website: An account with geocaching.com is not necessary for the class but it opens up the world of geocaching to you after the class is over. Many geocachers incoporate math, science, history and some of the most beautiful places on earth in their caches in such a fun way.
Talk it over with your parents and be wise - show them what we have done in class and have them explore the site with you. We will use the website during CKC class time and all students must have the usage note signed by their parents and co-signed by the student before use in class.
If you wish to sign up and internet is not available at home, the note has a section for parental permission to sign up using Eyestone's internet connection. Either way, choose a nickname you like and never give personal identifying information that can be posted online.
