Elementary School Counseling in Poudre School District

The elementary school counseling program in Poudre School District is based on the American School Counseling Association National Model.  The elementary school counseling program is comprehensive in scope, preventative in design and developmental in nature. There are four components to the program: curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services and system support.  Implementation of services may vary based upon the specific needs and personnel at individual sites.

  • Guidance Curriculum

The curriculum provides a developmental comprehensive program in a systematic way kindergarten through 6th grade.  It is delivered by the school counselor through classroom instruction, small groups, consultation with teachers and through parent workshops. The curriculum promotes knowledge, attitudes and skills through instruction in three content areas: academic, career and personal/social growth.

  • Individual Student Planning

Individual student planning consists of school counselors coordinating ongoing activities designed to help individual students meet their educational and personal goals.  Referrals are often made through the STAT process.  Interventions are generally delivered on an individual basis or by working in small groups.  Parents or guardians and other personnel are often included in these interventions.  The following activities are examples of what might occur in the elementary school:

ü     Test taking strategies.

ü     Test score review, interpretation and analysis.

ü     Social Skills training.

ü     Development and review of behavior plans.

ü     Homework buddies.

  • Responsive Services

The responsive services component of the school counseling program consists of activities to meet students’ immediate needs and concerns.

ü     These services are delivered through consultation with parents or guardians, teachers, other educators and community agencies.

ü     Counseling is provided in a small group or on an individual basis for students expressing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns or normal developmental tasks.  Such counseling is short term in nature.  When necessary, referrals are made to appropriate community resources.

ü     Crisis counseling is provided to students and families facing emergency situations.

  • System Support

System support consists of management activities that establish, maintain and enhance the total school counseling program.

ü     School counselors are involved in updating and sharing their professional knowledge and skills through training and professional association membership.

ü     School counselors collaborate and team with other members of the school community to understand and assess the emerging needs of students.

ü     School counselors gather data about their programs to help evaluate their effectiveness.

ü     School counselors participate in their fair share of responsibilities as team members within their schools.
