Reading
Poudre School District's adopted reading curriculum is Treasures. Students at Rice are instructed in Treasures from Pre-K to 5th grade. Teachers use Treasures as their primary resource for literacy instruction; however other types of instruction are utilized to offer a balanced literacy curriculum.
Full Day Kindergarten through 5th grade students receive 120 minutes of small and whole group literacy instruction. Half day Kindergarten receives 90 minutes of literacy instruction.
Small groups offer teachers the chance to work with groups of approximately four to six students who are reading at the same instructional level. Teachers introduce students to a text, work briefly with individuals within the group as they read the text, and select one or two teaching points to present to the group following the reading. At this time, teachers may also work on a particular skill the group may need additional support with such as, identifying main idea and detail or cause and effect.
The leveled book chosen by the teacher is one that allows the students to read the text with the skills and strategies they currently possess, but it provides them opportunity for learning or improving upon new skills.
The ultimate goal in small groups is to help children learn how to use independent reading strategies successfully.
Students are also instructed during a whole group setting. During this time students are introduced to a variety of activities such as weekly vocabulary, spelling, phonemic awareness, phonics, whole group reading (fiction and non-fiction using student anthologies) grammar, and writing.
The ultimate goal for whole group instruction is for students to hear a variety of responses, comments and discussions from peers.
