Helping Hands
| The 30 members of Shepardson's O Ambassadors Club have decided to call themselves the Helping Hands - and they have been busy! After only 4 meetings, they have already completed their first Awareness and Fundraising campaign. Their campaign to raise awareness kicked off with 7 members of the club speaking to the entire school at the Shepardson Diversity Assembly and Peace Walk. Members introduced the O Ambassadors club, explained the Millennium Goals, discussed poverty, and inspired their classmates to dream big and take action to change the world. In addition, 2 members shared winning essays about their dreams for the world. They also demonstrated a shocking statistic by having 1 in 3 people wear an armband and stand at the assembly to illustrate that 1 out of 3 people in the world live on less than $2 a day.
During the Peace Walk around the block, club members carried signs with messages about poverty and taking action to change the world. A reporter came to the event, and there was an article in the Coloradoan newspaper Saturday, February 2nd. This helped the club spread their message to the community. Did you know that 1 billion children in the world live in poverty? This week, they raised funds at school by asking each staff member and student to bring in $2. The money raised goes to Free the Children to help with projects that tackle poverty in Latin America. Club members made signs to encourage everyone to donate, and each morning on announcements they shared information about poverty, statistics, and inspirational quotes. During their campaign, club members wore green wristbands that say "Make a Difference" and shared what they were learning with friends and family. We are proud of their hard work and dedication to making a difference in the world. If they reach their fundraising goal for the week, there will be a drawing to see what lucky class gets to turn Mrs. Stolte into a human sundae! So as you can see, the Helping Hands club has been very busy and we appreciate everyone's support.
