Stove Prairie's Art, Music, and Physical Education News

Mountain Schools Art--Miss Brenda Colter

Art classes have been reviewing line, color, and shape. The artwork produced is absolutely fantastic!

Fifth and sixth grades  have studied some art history, learning about some of the oldest art in the world--the cave paintings at Lascaux Cave in France. Students did their own renditions of these paintings, and the results were awesome.

Future art lessons will include more work in art history, with studies of some of the Grand Masters, such as Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keefe, and others. We will also continue working with elements of art and design, learning to use these elements in the art we create. Students in Mr. Bryant’s, Mr. Brinkman’s, and Mr. Kuehnast’s classes will soon begin the unit in Native American Art, while they are studying Native American history in their Social Studies classes. Hopefully, this joint venture will reinforce what they learn in both classes.

Other classes will study Native American art later in the year, and will be creating art in the form of weaving, pottery, painting, etc.

I am very proud of the effort and creativity shown by all the students in the art classes. Great things are coming; I just know it!

Mountain Schools Physical Education-Mrs. Nancy West

We’re off to a great start in PE this year. All three schools have really been doing a great job at showing sportsmanship to their classmates, and always giving their best effort. We’ve talked a lot about sportsmanship this year as it really goes along with the character education piece from the counselor. So far we’ve done some cooperative activities, tae-bo, climbed on the ropes with some other fitness stations, ultimate football, kickball, and all kinds of physical activities. As winter approaches we will begin a basketball unit, play hockey, and work on our bowling skills and score keeping for the older kids. It has really been a lot of fun for me to continue to be up at all three Mountain Schools. It’s getting cold now, but it won’t be long until we can get back outside to play and Gamefest will quickly be here.

Mountain Schools Music-Ms. Nancy Conover

STRINGS!  BRASS!  WOODWINDS and PERCUSSION!

We’ve seen and heard it all!

The music room has been filled with students learning what instruments make up an Orchestra. This year we’ve been working with Rhythms…with body percussion and regular percussion instruments. We are planning to attend a special program at the Lincoln Center on Wednesday, October 27th.  This program features the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra playing music and putting on a show just for kids!  All 4th and 6th graders in the Poudre School District have been invited to attend and we are excited to go!

What else are we doing?

We played and sang Nursery Rhymes, learned The Alligator Rondo, Tarzan, Zudio, and the Alpine Song.  The students seem to love listening to the Scary Music Montages and were encouraged to make one of their own at home.

In Music Memory, the Kindergarten class learned about riding a train to pick berries in the mountains while listening to “The Little Train of the Caipira” and they each had a Teddy bear to sing with for the “Bear Dance” and “Going on a Bear Hunt”.

Ask your first and second grade student about our “Bees Buzzing” song to the “Flight of the Bumblebee.”  Third and fourth graders are dancing to “We Deliver” and will be learning movement to Bach’s “Little Fugue in G Minor.”

Fifth and sixth graders will be working with “On the Trail” from Grand Canyon Suite, “1812 Overture” by Tchaikovsky, and one of my all time favorites, “O Fortuna” from Carmina Burana.

As we shuffle, move and dance through these beautiful fall days, may you hear music wherever you go!
