Timnath Reservoir

By: Garrett Waag and David Swift

Timnath reservoir history
Timnath reservoir used to be Horner lake. Horner lake enlarged to grow crops and eventually people decided to call it the Timnath Reservoir. Dave Elliot said that he worked for Jack Smiley. Jack Smiley was the manager of the reservoir in 1937. Jack died 20 years ago. During World War I The government posted guards around the reservoir. The guards mainly consisted of African Americans because there was a lot of prejudiced people and they didn't want the white people to die. While Jack was running the reservoir there was a lot of ditch work going on. They had to dig the ditches around the reservoir. You would think it would be easy because you could do it by machine, but they had to do it by hand because they had no machine. The reservoir is now low but a few years ago it was pretty full. The head gates are on the south end of the reservoir. Head gates are gates that open and close to adjust the water level. There have been five people who have died in and around in reservoir.

Wildlife
The land of Timnath is rich with wildlife all over. There are many different kind of animals around the reservoir. The most common animals around the reservoir are coyotes, foxes, badgers, elk, and there used to be wolves. In the reservoir there are loads of fish. There are pike, catfish, trout, and bass.

The foxes are dog like creatures that live in dens in the ground. Their favorite food is meat. They like to fish. They have their puppies around the beginning of spring. Wolves are wild dogs that hunt for meat. Most wolves are very vicious but there are no more wolves at Timnath anymore. Coyotes are a little like wolves but they are less vicious and a lot smaller. Prairie dogs cover the area. They dig holes and tunnels under ground. You can see the prairie dogs pop there heads up out of their holes. It's a beautiful sight.

Garrett’s processing page
I created this history of Timnath when I was in sixth grade as part of a final choice class I chose this topic because I had been to Timnath reservoir many times before I wanted to know what kind of wildlife there was and I wanted to know the history of the reservoir. I gathered my information from Keith Shader and Dave Elliot. I was not nervous it was hard before I got me information because I didn't know about the reservoir. The most interesting thing I learned was that five people had died in and around the reservoir. The interviews were fun because we learned a lot of stuff. I thank every one who helped me like Keith Shader and Dave Elliot.

David's Processing Page
I created this page about the reservoir when I was in the sixth grade as a part of my final choice class. I chose this topic because I thought it would be interesting to find out more about the reservoir. I also wanted to know what kind of wildlife lived around the Timnath reservoir.

My most helpful resource was probably interviewing Keith Shader and Dave Elliot. Everything was slow before I got to interview the people of Timnath. I wasn’t nervous at all while interviewing. I knew I needed information and I really didn¹t care how I got it. I really liked the stories that Dave Elliot told me. I also found it interesting when Keith Shader told me that the rare grebe lived in the reservoir, and that was one of the only places it could be found. All of it was interesting. It was fun to interview. The stories that the people told were great. They seemed to know a lot.

I would like to thank every one of the people that took the time to come and help me with my project. I couldn¹t have done it without them.

I thought that the best part about the project was getting to know more about the little town of Timnath. I think the future researchers should find more stories. It is very fun to listen to the people tell them to you. I think I could have found out more stories about the reservoir and other places around the Timnath. I hope that the stories that I wrote will become known throughout Timnath.
