History of Timnath School

The first Timnath school was built in Weld County about 1/2 mile east of the county line. The first teacher was William Acafee C.A Duncan. In 1866 a school district was organized in Loveland. The teacher was Sarah Milner, who was credited with being the first teacher in Larimer County. During 1869 Larimer County was organized into six school districts with Mr. J.M. Smith as the superintendent. The Buss Log School could hold about 25 students. By 1879 it held about 50 students for several years.

Some of the popular games for the girls were London Bridge is Falling Down for the boy's favorites were baseball and marbles. In 1880 at May School District meeting, they decided to divide the district line south of Timnath. In 1900 Fairview voted to build a two room school house on the edge of Timnath in order to add two more grades to the curriculum. The consolidated school that they built was for grades 1st - 12th. The old Timnath school is now our cafeteria. At one point Timnath had one of the best education schools of its kind in Colorado.

In March 21, 1935, at about 11:00 A.M. a shorted electrical circuit in the auditorium of Timnath School and set the curtains on fire. Everyone got out in time and no one got hurt. Because of some restrictions the school was built exactly the same as before.

In 1985 Timnath added a bell tower. it would cost $6,000 to have a bell cast. Two Timnath parents, both Navy Veterans, knew that the U.S Naval Yard in Washington, DC stored ship parts and naval equipment. The school principal, Ruth Herron, requested a bell and described the size and weight of the bell desired. The Navy sent a bell (free of charge) in time for the dedication ceremony of the new school addition. The new addition is now for Kindergarten-2nd grade. The school now has about 575 students. They are building a new cafeteria in the south end of the school and the old cafeteria will be the new art room.

Hello, my name is Ryan and I created this history of Timnath page when I was in sixth grade as my last choice class. I chose this topic because I thought it would be interesting to learn about the history of Timnath schools. I gathered information from the Timnath book and from the Larimer County History. This was a little easy because I found all my resources in two books. Most of my resources came from Larimer County History. I did interview a few people but I didn't use any of the information because it was not relevant to the subject. I want to thank, Elsie Fisher, for coming and talking to the students.
