Positive Behavior Support System Earning Family Cub Paws with our children!!!
Return your matrix to your teacher by May 14th, with at least 10 items completed, and your child will receive a cub paw. A copy of the cub paw goes to Principal Camp's office to be used for a weekly raffle. Your child will have the chance to win a book the week the matrix is returned.
Dear Families,
Werner Elementary School has experienced great success using a school-wide positive behavior support system (PBS) since it was instituted nearly three years ago. PBS has provided staff and students with specific behavioral expectations, a structure to directly teach those positive behaviors, and ways to recognize and reinforce appropriate behavior. As a result, Werner has seen a reduction in office discipline problems, an increase in school safety, and the building of a closer community through the consistency and sustainability of this approach.
At the core of Werner’s PBS program is the teaching matrix. Based on our ROAR code (Respect, Own your behavior, Attitude that is positive and Responsibility) the matrix provides examples of positive behaviors for specific locations throughout the building. From this matrix, the staff consistently teaches and reinforces positive behaviors for all students.
An integral part of the PBS program is home involvement. A joint group of PTA members and the PBS committee thought families might enjoy an opportunity to design their own home matrix. This is not a requirement, but rather one way to connect school and home life for our children.
We have included both a sample and a blank matrix for your family’s use. Perhaps you would like to focus on specific areas or times of day which need more structure or improvement in some way. Please remember to focus on the POSITIVE behaviors for each category as you create your matrix. This provides a strong, positive base that your children and you can revisit when problems may arise.
We hope the partnership of our family and school communities through PBS will enhance both the academic and personal development for all Werner children. Please let us know of any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for your support!
